Cheap Reliable Hosting

A website requires two things:

Thing 1: A domain name. Actually, you don't really need one as a website can also run from a sub-domain like blah.blogger.com where blah is the sub of blogger) Domain names cost about $10 per year and can be purchased with little effort at a place like GoDaddy.com

Note: When purchasing a domain name, BE CAREFUL to only select the purchase of the name. GoDaddy is very good about "up-selling" which means you pay lots more than you need to for the name. Start with just the name and you can always go back and spend more later.

Thing 2: A hosting company This is where you save your website files so others can view them. Our rule of thumb is that you should never host at the same place where you have your domain names. e.g,. Buy your names at GoDaddy, but host at HostGator or some other such place. I would explain why this is, but just trust me on this.

If you plan to run only one website, then the Hatchling account from HostGator is plenty good enough. That costs about $5/month if you puchase by the year, slightly more if you're a month-to-month.

If you plan to run more than one website then go with the Baby account. This gives you the same as Hatchling but with space to add more domain names. This will cost you about $8/month.

If you plan to run any ecommerce from your site (take credit cards) then you're stuck with a Business account. You need this one because the other two accounts can't have their own IP address which you must have to have your own SSL (security/encryption stuff if you don't know what this means) This will run you $15/month.

Ordering Your Hosting

When you go to order your hosting, they will need to know if you are registering a new domain or using an existing. If you already have your domain name, then you should select the 2nd option "I will use My Existing Domain..."

After the account is paid for, they will send you a welcome email with ID and password for your new hosting account. If you want us to help you with getting your site uploaded there, email us that welcome email and we'll take it from there.

Click to order your hosting package When their home page appears, click the ORDER NOW button that should appear in the HOSTING section in the upper left corner of their site.
